Plan Budget Holidays (Without Missing the Fun)

Do you think people who travel often have a lot of money to spare? Not necessarily!

Now here’s the thing: Most people who travel often aren’t rich – they are smart. They know how to plan smartly and create wonderful experiences within their budget.

Let that sink in!

Travel doesn’t have to create a large hole in your pocket. If you think it will, you should drop your travel plans right away and get back to your daily mundane routine. In other words, don’t travel, don’t explore new places, don’t experience different people and cultures.

But is that how you really want to live? Of course you don’t.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not asking you to choose between travel and money. I’m just asking you to plan smartly so you can get the most out of your trips and enjoy thoroughly within your desired budget.

A budget trip is not always about spending less. It is about experiencing more with what you have.

How? Let’s find out…

Plan an Awesome Trip on a Budget

Here are a few tips:

1.      Choose Travel Destinations Smartly

Being hung up on expensive domestic or international destinations is a sure shot way to empty your pockets in no time. The goal is to enjoy the destination, have fun, and make memories that last a lifetime – not to go broke. That being said, if your goal is to take a luxury trip, then by all means, go ahead and have the time of your life.

But if you have a budget in mind, explore similar hidden gems closer to home. For example, the Andamans and Lakshadweep are great alternatives to expensive destinations such as the Maldives or Seychelles. These destinations do require spending money and time on visa processing, meaning you can get much more value for the money you invest.

Other places that offer stunning experiences at a fraction of international trip costs are:

i.                 Malwan

ii.                Pondicherry

iii.               Rishikesh

iv.               Gokarna

2.     Travel Off-Season

This is a trick many travelers use to lock in great deals. Peak season travel equals peak prices. Off-season is when everything, including hotels, transportation, food, shopping, etc., costs less.

Besides, off-season travel means fewer crowds, less traffic, more peace, and a slower pace.

You can explore and enjoy tourist spots at leisure and click pictures without rushing through important spots due to heavy traffic and large crowds.

3.      Choose Accommodation Wisely

Unless you are planning on spending your days in a luxury resort, don’t book one.

Think about it – when on a trip, most of your time is usually spent outdoors, which means you may not be able to experience the luxury offered by a high-end resort. What then is the point of spending money on a place that you barely have time to experience?

Spend on comfort instead. Book a 3 Star property with clean rooms, hot baths, and good beds to help you sleep well. This will ensure you get a good night’s rest and wake up refreshed.

If you wish to spend less, you can book rooms in hostels, dormitories, homestays, budget Airbnbs, and guest houses. Just make sure they’re clean and have basic amenities.

4.      Book Transportation Tickets in Advance

Track deals. Compare Prices. Book transport early.

If you’re traveling to a nearby destination, book your train or bus tickets well in advance so you have confirmed tickets and/or good seats. If your destination requires air travel, ensure you book tickets at least a couple of months in advance for cheaper deals.

Of course, we understand that sometimes life happens, and you may need to travel when the urge hits you. For all other times, we suggest you plan well in advance.

5.      Eat Local

Avoid touristy restaurants that lure you in and charge a bomb for food that costs half the price at a local eatery. In my experience, local eateries and street food are often more authentic, cheaper, and tastier.

6.      Use Public Transportation

Instead of booking cabs for sightseeing, you can use cheaper local transportation such as buses, autorickshaws, and tuk-tuks. This will also enable you to meet locals and experience life the way they do.

7.      Leave Room for Unplanned Experiences

Plan everything, but also budget for spontaneous moments and impulsive shopping that often happen on a trip.
